Coup de cœur
The girl who fell beneath the sea

Pitch :
Deadly storms have ravaged Mina’s homeland for generations. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them. Each year a beautiful maiden is sacrificed to the sea in the hopes of appeasing him.
Many believe that Shim Cheong, the most beautiful girl in the village – and the beloved of Mina’s older brother Joon – may be the one to finally end the suffering. But on the night Cheong is to be sacrificed, Joon follows her out to sea, knowing that to interfere is a death sentence. To save her brother, Mina throws herself into the water in Cheong’s stead.
Swept away to the Spirit Realm, Mina seeks out the Sea God, only to find him caught in an enchanted sleep. With the help of a mysterious young man and a motley crew of demons and spirits, Mina sets out to wake the Sea God and bring an end to the killer storms once and for all.
But a human cannot live long in the land of the spirits. And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking…

The librarian’s opinion :
If you like korean series, this novel was made for you ! It gathers all the ingredients to a successfull drama : a heroine poor but determined, 2 love interests with great appeal : very handsome, charming and, of course, rich, a historical background, and loads of twists and turns. The only thing missing in this pictures are the sponsors showing up at the end of every chapter.
On a serious note, this book really is easy to read, accessible for those who would love to read in english but aren’t sure with which book to start. The love story – a bit of a slow burn – is touching, the characters are endearing and, last but not least, it is a nice introduction to korean folklore.
In a nutshell, I recommend this reading very much.
